Künstlersozialabgabe - the "user's contribution": social security contributions for artists and cross-border activities

Is it necessary to pay the special social security contributions for self-employed artists, the Künstlersozialabgabe (KSA) for events of German ensembles or bands abroad, or on fees for rehearsals or for artistic services abroad? Is KSA relevant for fees paid to artists/publicists from abroad who perform in Germany? Are foreign organisers of events in Germany liable to pay contributions and what happens when artists collect money from the public themselves?

Answers to these questions can be found here

Visa and residence conditions pursuant to Section 22 Sentence 2 AufenthG (humanitarian grounds)

The new section contains information about visa and residence conditions pursuant to Section 22 Sentence 2 of the German Residence Act (AufenthG – Aufenthaltsgesetz).

Section 22 AufenthG states that: “A foreigner may be granted a temporary residence permit for the purpose of admission from abroad for reasons of international law or on urgent humanitarian grounds.”

Events

Here you can meet touring artists in March and April 2023:

20 March 2023: MONTHLY MEET-UP: musicians, festivals, funding, locations – meet the music scene

The next MONTHLY MEET-UP is the perfect opportunity for musicians, festival organisers, and music industry professionals to come together. Our guests are Sophie Aumüller (Impuls neue Musik), Yeşim Duman (PopKultur), Korhan Erel (musician), and Mario Michel (Ausland Berlin).

For the second time we are cooperating with the programme GOETHE-INSTITUT IM EXIL. In many countries Goethe-Institutes and other cultural institutes had to be closed due to war or censorship. GOETHE-INSTITUT IM EXIL aims to create a new space where artists can meet, exchange and network. As part of this cooperation, we are moving our MONTHLY MEET-UP to ACUD MACHT NEU Berlin.

>> 20 March 2023, 5pm at ACUD MACHT NEU, Berlin; event in English, registration

4. April 2023: Performing Arts Programm (PAP) online workshop: Working abroad - what do I have to consider? (in German)

Guest performances or other artistic activities outside Germany are increasingly common. Which administrative regulations must be observed when working abroad? This workshop will explain the following basic principles: invoicing abroad (VAT in an international context), foreign withholding tax, coordination of social security in Europe and (self) posting with an A1 certificate, right of residence in states outside the EU as well as customs law, with a focus on applying for carnets. The workshop is aimed at artists living in Germany who are planning projects outside Germany.

Information is available here; workshop in German
