name of the term: Marginal employment
descriptions of the term:

Marginal employment

According to German law (§ 8 (1) No. 1 SGB IV), employment can be considered marginal employment if the monthly remuneration does not exceed 520 euros. The weekly working hours and the number of monthly working hours are irrelevant.
Persons in marginal employment are insured against accidents but are not subject to the requirement for compulsory insurance under the statutory health insurance, long-term care insurance, and unemployment schemes. They may be exempted from compulsory statutory pension insurance contributions. The employer makes fixed payments to the health and pension insurance carriers but the employee does not receive health insurance coverage. He/she must obtain his/her own health insurance coverage.
