Transporting orthopaedic aids on public transport

People with a severely disabled person's pass and a valid token may take certain orthopaedic aids with them on public transport free of charge and without an additional ticket. This regulation is enshrined in Section 228 (6) of the Social Code IX (SGB IX).

The orthopaedic aids that can be taken on board include, in particular:

  • electric wheelchairs,
  • active, sports and folding wheelchairs,
  • walking aids such as forearm crutches, walkers and triwalkers,
  • special bicycles such as bicycles for people with disabilities or tricycles that have been specially designed for severely disabled people.

In order for an aid to be permitted on board, it must meet certain technical requirements (usually maximum width, length, total permissible weight). Details can be found on the websites of local public transport companies. Individual consultation with the transport company is usually necessary for larger or heavier aids (e.g. heavy electric wheelchairs or special designs).
